Your domain name

The simplest way to buy a domain name is to get me to do it for you! I will then look after it, make sure you don't lose it, and take care of the technical side of connecting it to your website.

However, you will want to search for the best name you can find for your business, and this is achieved by using the WHOIS lookup service. Click here to search for a name

Once you have chosen your name, register it with a company like Heart Internet - great value domain names!

If you are registering a name yourself, be sure to make a note of all the information you need to be in control of the name - you'd be surprised how many people lose their log-in information! You will need it to point the name at the hosting service for your site.

About domain names

Your domain name is your Internet identity, your online brand. Your customers will remember this name and use it to find out about your products and services. No two parties can ever hold the same domain name simultaneously, so your Internet identity is totally unique.

The domain name system came about because it is hard for people to remember the IP address of a website. The domain name is the 'go between' a user and an IP address.

For example, the domain name yourname.com represents your company. When someone types yourname.com in a web browser or sends you e-mail, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates this into the IP address used by the Internet and connects you.

It is useful to have a domain name or e-mail address that is the same or similar to your company name or product. If your name is The Firm, you could register the domain name thefirm.com and your e-mail address could be anything@thefirm.com. Your customers would also be able to access your Web site by visiting "www.thefirm.com" with their web browser.
